Ristomatti Ratia and Stefan Lindfors introduce their sofa innovations designed for Pohjanmaan Kaluste

FINNISH SOFA DESIGN IN 2011: THE ECOLOGICAL ‘RISTOMATTI’ AND SURPRISING ‘PLAY’ MODEL

Pohjanmaan Kaluste Oy is counted among the top innovators of the Finnish furnishings industry. In 2010, the company announced what is likely the first sofa collection designed in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. The materials used in Luonto products were selected after extensive product development work to ensure as minimal a burden as possible on the environment. The Luonto collection has since been further expanded to include coffee tables and storage furniture.

“We provide an ecological alternative for your major household furnishing purchases. Despite the demands for the materials, we are not willing to compromise comfort or visual appeal. For that reason, we have called on the talents of top Finnish designers to design our new models,” explains Eira Viitala, Pohjanmaan Kaluste.

“I wanted to showcase the exquisite dialogue between linen and wood in the sofa and armchairs that bear my name as part of the ecological Luonto collection. I also wanted to focus some attention on creating storage space. The long Luonto coffee table and multipurpose tabletop provide additional storage space within the home,” states Ristomatti Ratia.

Among experts in the field, Pohjanmaan Kaluste is also well known as an active developer of furniture mechanisms. The brand new PLAY sofa, designed by Stefan Lindfors, for example, has been equipped with a bed mechanism and an exciting electrically-adjustable divan.

“When I became better acquainted with the Pohjanmaan collection, I was immediately struck by all the new seat and bed mechanisms. So I became inspired to develop functions that would even further increase one’s sofa experience. Who knows what you may find in the PLAY sofa?” Stefan Lindfors states playfully.

In addition to the new models designed by Ratia and Lindfors, Pohjanmaan Kaluste will launch, at the Habitare 2011 fair, a new, versatile and adjustable Recliner line and a design sofa featuring built-in quality Finnish speakers.
